the Beijinger's Bar of the Week -Back to top-
From 1949 to 2002, the Hidden
City compound manufactured saw blades for hotpot meat slicers. 1/5 bar inhabits the only original building left
on the complex. For more than 50 years, the high-ceilinged room turned pig iron into steel. “This was where the
metal cocktail was melted and smelted,” says GM Malcolm McLauchlan. Now, after time-consuming interior
redecoration, 1/5 mixes liquors. A private lounge on the upper level boasts two stripper poles, comfortable seating, and
a glass-floored dance area that looks onto the abalone-inlaid bar downstairs. The bar and dance area on the ground level
mixes contemporary with classic styles. The space benefits from Hidden City’s gallery next door, as artsy doodads
from McLauchlan’s collections pop up on the walls and dangle from the ceiling. A narrow lane of outdoor seating
shooting along the outside wall of the Hidden City compound completes the bar.1/5’s musical selection veers towards songs that have passed the test of time. The genre nights feel informed rather than gimmicky, with artists like The Cure, Donna Summers, The The, Howard Jones, Big Country, and Hendrix on the playlist. Drink prices range from RMB 49 for cocktails and spirits to RMB 4,880 for a bottle of twenty-year-old Ballantine. The bar – and the compound as a whole – carries a subtle charisma that can convince the most frugal of cheapskates that RMB 39 for a Tsingtao is a bargain rather than an imposition. Mon-Sat, happy hour 5-8pm, two for one. 1/5 Mon-Thu, 5pm-1am. Fri-Sat, 5pm-3am. Now pay attention: I'm recommending a restaurant where a hamburger costs an unbelievable RMB 110. The offshoot of a Hollywood outfit by the same name – 25 Degrees – it's identical in everything, including pricing. They market the uber-burger, served in an upscale saloon setting – red flock wallpaper, leatherette booths, gleaming central bar. Customers build their burgers from nine ritzy cheeses, 11 gourmet extras (arugula, caramelized onion, etc), and 12 sauces. The burgers were an inch and a half thick and perfectly cooked. I ordered a root beer float (RMB 60) and suddenly I was 10 again. Bar offerings are good but murderously priced (Tsingtao RMB 50). You can't justify the cost of food and drink at 25 Degrees, but it does sell an experience. It's open 24 hours, and you might call in there in the middle of a roaring evening on Gongti Xilu when suddenly money's not important. Then the smart ambience, knowing soundtrack and cool menu will work their magic. 25 Degrees Daily 24-hours. 7A Gongti Xilu, Chaoyang District (6552 3600) 朝阳区工体西路7A Search for more Beijing restaurants by name in our online directory of venues The Beijinger Podcast -Back to top-

On Tuesday I navigated my way through the huge Coca-Cola advertisement, formerly known as The Place, to CJW, where sports brand Puma were presenting the Jamaican Olympic delegation to Beijing. When I say Beijing, I mean any one who had tickets to the event (those pretty-looking people who seem to only exist at opening parties and functions where there’s free booze and photographers) and the smug folk who you see sauntering around town with those silly passes hanging around their necks. The majority of the Jamaican athletes were in attendance, though kept themselves to themselves in a cordoned-off VIP area, “guarded” by two rather befuddled bao’an. Messrs Powell and Bolt, however, were conspicuously absent. Proceedings started with Sichuan bianlian – traditional Sichuan face-changing opera – before the dancers cast off all their robes revealing themselves to be hot hip-hop babes. Who would have thought?! The transformation (with the help of a Sean Paul soundtrack) got the athletes going, before the vibe was subdued by the introduction of Scottish crooner Paolo Nutini (despite the Italian mantle, he’s apparently from Paisley). Hitherto, I’ve never heard of him (nor, I suspect, had anyone else in the room), but apparently he has a song about shoes, which was enough for Puma to use it on their ads. Still, having a Scotsman sing bouncy Britpop was a little incongruous with the Jamaican theme of an event, which was in part a celebration of Jamaican Independence Day. CJW will host most of the Jamaican team's events, though most are invite only. However, the embassy has assured us that there will be a number of reggae gigs open to the public. Picasso’s CeramicsThe artist’s most down-to-earth show. During his visit to Vallauris, France (where Picasso single handedly saved the local ceramic industry), the Spanish artist was so impressed by the art of changing clay to gold that he started making his own ceramics. Among his more than 2,000 ceramic pieces displayed at this exhibition are 28 clay-plays made during the period of 1947 to 1969. Although the familiar icons, like his multi-dimensional woman faces and ox, will still remind us of the pedestal upon which he is placed, the plebian nature of these ceramic wares allows the legendary icon to bend down and get closer to the viewers. A number of ancient works of calligraphy and paintings from the Jin (265-420) to the Qing (1644-1911) dynasties will be shown, among them one of the ten most famous ancient Chinese paintings. Night Revels of Han Xizai, by Gu Hongzhong, a Southern Tang (937-975) court painter who was ordered by the emperor to record the sumptuous lifestyle of the government official Han Xizai, is especially worth seeing. Controversial because the piece is still under question of whether it is as a Song dynasty (960-1279) replica or Gu's genuine work, the work is still, nonetheless, one of mastery. Other gems from Chinese calligrapher Wang Xizhi (303-361) will be exhibited.
A narrow lane of outdoor seating
shooting along the outside wall of the Hidden City compound completes the bar.
