Re: Get ready for it -- Murderball

Went to the games today. China/Japan was kind of boring...but the US/CAN game ROCKED.

Nick Springer, playing with stumps below his elbows, was amazing out there. Scored 5 points.

I was surprised Mark Zupan didn't play much, but he played very well when he did. Maybe they are saving him for the final game...

Final was 37-32 US, but the game seemed closer than that.

Re: Get ready for it -- Murderball

you thought zupan played well? seemed like the only two bad passes i saw the US team make were tossed by him. Agree with you that Springer was awesome though, and the contrast between the two games was great.

Did you see the "smash the man with the ball" drill the Canadians were doing at the beginning of the match? Classic.

The game was great but we need more Americans out to cheer the team on tuesday night at the finals -- the Canadians seemed to have a much bigger (or should I say louder) fan base there.

Went to wheelchair basketball this evening (the US snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, losing to Canada double overtime after blowing a 6-point lead with less than 5 minutes to play), and interesting to contrast the two sports. The b-ballers seemed a bit more graceful in some way, but rugby's definitely more fun to watch.

Ryley Batt (the guy on the left):

is the guy the US needs to stop -- he's scored more than half of Australia's points in the paralympics

Batt's last-gasp heroics sink New Zealand

RYLEY Batt has become a behemoth of the Paralympic Games. American TV crews came to blows trying to get near him after the 19-year-old put Australia into the medal round of the demolition derby called wheelchair rugby.

It's 'murder' out there

The Globe and Mail wrote:
BEIJING -- If there is any sport at the Paralympics with the potential to cross over and become mainstream entertainment, it is "murderball" - the violent crashing and bashing of the gladiator athletes of wheelchair rugby.

These guys love mayhem on wheels

Shanghai Daily wrote:
WHEELCHAIR rugby features aspects of many games, except one - rugby.
First, toss in a bit of wheelchair basketball, stir in the mayhem of a "dodge 'em car" ride, the spills of ice hockey and the blocking of American football.
Second, and this is easy to forget, the four players on the basketball-court size floor are all quadriplegics - athletes who've lost some function in each of their four limbs.
Third, always remember what the game was called when it was invented 31 years ago in Canada - "Murderball."

Steelers steal the show

Daily Telegraph wrote:
AUSTRALIA has made wheelchair rugby one of the most popular sports at the Paralympics with their unbeaten run over three preliminary rounds being played out in front of packed houses.

Re: Get ready for it -- Murderball

Batt was the superstar tonite! incredibly smart guy who won the most intensive applause! The US team is the best team who really knows how to play together but it needs a superstar like Batt.

welcome all nice/sane people for serious discussion

Sorry, no Hello Kitty available here;-)

Re: Get ready for it -- Murderball

Australia will be a gold medal contender for years to come with Batt at the helm -- the guy's big, blistering fast and only 19 years old
