Cheapest way to get to Shanghai and then to Hong Kong?

Two of my friends and I are going to travel to Shanghai and then Hong Kong for a couple of days in October. Plane tickets seems to be a little expensive, at least when you try to look them up on expedia.com or similar website. What would be the cheapest way to travel from Beijing to Shanghai to Hong Kong and back? Is there a train from Hong Kong to Beijing? What is the best website to get tickets from? I would appreciate good advices. Thanks!

Train to train. From BJ to SH, the train will cost about 450-500 for a sleeper (1 of 4 in sleeper (soft berth) compartment). This is no big deal, as I have done it several times.
Same from Shanghai to HK. Take the train. Should be about 800 or less, in 1 of 4 sleeper (soft class). Sometimes there are specials, but with the Olympic traffic, I doubt that. The SH-HK and the BJ-HK trains also offer two person compartments, which I think go for 1200. Not too sure of these prices, but should be readily available online. Recommend you use China Travel Service (but one of their offices that handle trains) as they sometimes have blocks of tickets and availability when train shows sold out. Also, group discount available for 4 traveling together, which I think are significant. Maybe good enough to buy 4 even if 3 only traveling together. Ck - it out.

Actually you can also keep an eye on air tickets via http://english.ctrip.com. Perhaps find a surprise one day.
