Products I miss while in China
I was sitting around last night watching some bootleg DVD's munching on some Yonghe Youtiao and sipping a soybean drink, when my friend called from the States.
His response when I mentioned my snack food of choice was "hmm...interesting" It got me thinking of younger days when we used to go for a Blockbuster video run and pick up random snackfoods for the evening.
York Perppermint Patties
Dr. Browns Cherry Soda
Snapple Peach Iced Tea
Reeses Peanut Butter Cups
Sara Lee Poundcake
Cool Whip
Boboli Pizza Crusts
Klondike Ice Cream bars
Giant Pretzels with mustard
Hummus and pita bread
My Local Korean deli which stocked all of the above and had a mile long salad bar that sold food by weight...
What snacks do you miss?

Re: Products I miss while in China
does Dr. Pepper count? though i can get it here, very hard to find and quite expensive.
Cheetos (the real one, not the Chinese Cheetos that taste sweet)
Jalapeno poppers (you know, those frozen appetizers)
come to think of it, all TGIF-brand frozen appetizers: potation skins, mini bagel pizzas, cheese sticks, southwest eggrolls ...
chimichanga
quesadilla
Velveeta queso (i know, very trashy, but love it!)
Nestle ice-cream "drumsticks" with caramel on the inside
FAMILY-SIZE ice-cream! what's up with those mini haagen daz here?
quencher-size soda from 7-11 and gas station.
7-11 Slurpee with the Star War cup.
taco Hell! yo quiero Taco Bell!

Re: Products I miss while in China
If you like real natural yoghurt you can make it yourself, use one of the little earthenware pots of yoghurt that you can buy from the little shops or stallholders as a starter (it's live). Then buy whatever milk you like, bring it to the boil and then let it cool until you can just stand to put your little finger in it and count to ten. After that, stir in the starter and leave in a warm place for a few hours or overnight. You can use the yoghurt you made to start the next batch and keep it going for weeks or months if you want. Delicious.

Velveta Queso - OMG I miss it sooooo much!
You know, they used to sell the big blocks of Velveta at the LiDo Jenny Lou's but they stopped shortly after I raided them all. Now, I have to get the crappy 'queso in a jar' stuff which is really no comparison. Wayway, if you fina a good source for Velveta, please do PM me. We'll have a chips and queso party!
I also miss teddy grahams and golden grahams cereal. Not to mention good old fashioned U.S.D.A. 2% milk (non-irradiated).

Re: Products I miss while in China
How could I forget Cheetos! The treat that turns your fingers orange and if you happen to accidently drop one on clothes or furniture leaves a fine coat of orange cheese dust that can not be washed out. I've spent a number of hours sucking my fingertips while nursing a bag of this fine concoction.
I think I will put together a list to handover to our friends at Jenny Lou's as suggestions on additional items to stock.

One more thing I miss terribly; Blue Bell Ice Cream.
If you've never had Blue Bell you're missing out

Re: Products I miss while in China
oh, no, Beijing Rob. so it was you who got all my Velveeta. did you raid all my Dr. Pepper too?
it seems like most of our common addiction has something to do with dairy products. i wonder if all of us laowai can write a petition letter to Whole Foods for them to open a store in BJ. just imagine the line of hungry laowai waiting when the store opens. it could be another IKEA.
and for 2% milk, Nestle's low-fat high-calcium ain't bad. but at twice the price of good old Eli, i'm not sure if i can't see it as a ripoff.

whoa...
Whole Foods in Beijing. In a way I hope so and I hope not. If they were to open a store that would mean an end to my disposable income.

Re: Products I miss while in China
Several things on my list have been mentioned already, but I have to say them again:
Golden Grahams (I did recently get some in a Bday package, but they're gone now)
Dr. Pepper (I prefer from a soda fountain, like from Sonic)
Cherry Limeades and other menu items from Sonic
Velveeta w/Rotel (I've got a block in my cabinet just waiting to be eaten, though)
Blue Bell Ice Cream- They used to have this flavor called Chocolate Decadence, but it was only out for a few years. I've had to come to terms that anyone who has not spent considerable time in TX or other parts of the south have no idea what Blue Bell is, they think it's the same as Blue Bunny!
Little Debbie snack cakes (especially Nutty Bars and Zebra stripes, although I did find a passable replacement for Nutty Bars)
Reeses Pieces
Hot pockets

Re: Products I miss while in China
there're just so many products you'd think the manufacturers must have introduced to china but never.
e.g. peanuts are popular here. but how come i haven't seen any peanut butterfinger, or much reese's cup, or PB&J, or peanut butter flavor ice-cream? why is it so damn hard to get a Chunky Skippy?
and since Chinese ppl are so big on chicken, how come we've only got KFC, but not Chik-fil-A, Popeye's, Church's?
and is it that hard for McDonald's to bring at least one Chipotle over? it's much better than their Chinese-sauce chicken quesadilla with rice crispy. yikes, just thinking of it.

Hey TX Chick,
I am also from Texas. Would that make you more willing to sell your block of cheese to me??? Just name your price and I'll pay it.
Wayway, wanna go in halves? I already have tortilla chips ready to go.

Re: Products I miss while in China
Wow, Little Debbie cakes, I could go for that. Also miss Edy's ice cream especially at times when they Girl Scout Mint Chocolate Chip flavor. And for that matter, many of the Girl Scout cookies I miss also. Actually, I think I have a long list of items but don't want to use up that many pages.

Re: Products I miss while in China
hmmm, I'd have to think about that one, Beijing Rob.
I thought I might have seen some small blocks of Velveeta at Jenny Lou's on Sanlitun. Have you looked there? I think they even had the Mexican kind. Or maybe it was the Jenny Lou's at Ritan Bei Lu.
Or you could look at My Shop up in Wudaokou, though I can't remember if I've seen it there or not.

Amen on the bigass drinks and slurpees.
Nothing says "We are fatass Americans" than drinks with names like "Super Tanker" or "Super Big Gulp", and basically drinking a gallon of soda in one sitting.
And don't you guys miss the Slurpee brain freeze? And the bright blue or red or green tongue?

You are right Teriyaki. Big ass drinks everywhere. Go to Taco Bell get that huge cup, drink a few of them while eating a variety of "healthy food" and then getting it filled again before getting into the car.

Re: Products I miss while in China
I'd always get diet drinks because when the drinks are in bigass form, it's like 2 thousand calories a drink or something crazy like that. I'd suck those bigass drinks down and then run to the bathroom before my bladder popped. Hehe... good times...
Yeah, I know diet stuff probably causes cancer.

Count me in as well as part of the Texas group. Why are there so many of us here in Beijing?
On that note, the one thing I really, really miss is cookie dough ice cream.

Re: Products I miss while in China
Just to mention again,
For you Texans especially - If you guys love Willie Nelson, Robert Earle Keene, Townes Van Zandt, and other Texas musicians - I will be playing a lot of that kind of music tomorrow night at LUSH in WuDaoKou. I highly encourage you to come out. Last show we had a plethora of Texans and we really showed the local people how to raise the roof.
To those of you that are not from Texas, Texas loves you anyways

Re: Products I miss while in China
I'm not from Texas but had an office that I operated in Houston and thus had to go there often to keep an eye on things. Also, provided a room in my house to a girl from Texas who really informed me a lot about Texas and was so proud of her Yellow Rose Tattoo.

In Qingdao they have a Popeye's Chicken. I wonder why Beijing doesn't have one.
I also miss Cheez Whiz, Life cereal and Old English Malt Liquor. That stuff messes you up!
