Taking a cue from the super trendy bars of the same name in Miami and New York City, Café Sambal owner Cho Chong Gee has expanded his Jiu Gulou empire two alleys north to Zhang Wang hutong. “I took a trip to Ibiza last summer and was inspired to do a tapas bar modeled after places like the one in Miami,” says the Malaysian-born nightlife maven. Located in a converted danwei-style courtyard, his new digs sport a minimalist, concrete-laden bar that leads into a colonial style middle room. Out back is a giant deck with two rear rooms decorated with a Chinese theme and subtle touches of Indian and Southeast Asian influences. Like Sambal’s, all of the furniture was designed by Cho himself. The tapas selections includes everything from traditional Spanish style munchies to Asian finger foods. Tsingtaos run RMB 20 each and you can indulge in a jar of sangria for RMB 150. Expect chillout music pumping through the extensive house speakers and DJ parties every weekend. Feb 04
