This difficult-to-find establishment bills itself as a pool hall, but only three pool tables and a haughty air keep things from getting rowdy. The high ceilings and artfully designed lofts, like the clientele, are attractive. Ball House is located in a residential area – so don't expect to stay up late and holler. Bars & Clubs

Hopes have been often raised – and often dashed – that some small area of the city will avoid the chintzy mange that blotches Sanlitun or Houhai with neon, and retain some semblance of pristine tastefulness. The current front-runner appears to be the area around Gulou/Zhonglou, and the Ball House, despite its name, does not disappoint. There is something quite pleasant about the high ceilings, random lofts, and kitchen that is clearly bigger than they know what to do with. Though technically a pool hall (three tables, membership RMB 100/month, 1,000/year, games RMB 40/hour), Ball House is supplied with plenty of other games, and enough tastefully designed space in which to revel. Try the large selection of Chinese tea, ‘healthy coffee’ (RMB 20) or the house specialty Long Island Iced Tea (RMB 35). They might even let you cook something in the kitchen. May 04
