Alameda, Annie’s & Cepe come up big in '07 tbj reader restaurant awards

BEIJING – Alameda, Annie’s Cafe, and newcomer Cépe were the big winners at the 4th Annual that’s Beijing Reader Restaurant Awards held on the rooftop terrace of China Lounge Monday afternoon. Hosts Ai Wan – actress and proprietor of China Doll – and Beijing-based freelance television journalist Steven Jiang played to a crowd of over 300 guests while announcing the winners in 28 cuisine categories.

“This is the fourth year we’ve held the awards and they’ve been very influential from the start,” says that’s Beijing General Manager Michael Wester. “Our readers look to their fellow readers for guidance on where to eat in Beijing. Overall, these awards highlight how excellent dining choices in Beijing have grown over the years.”

Alameda won a total of six awards including Best Lunch, Best Service, and the grand prize, Restaurant of the Year. It also picked up three Outstanding prizes in the Steak, for a Date and Value for Money categories. Annie’s Cafe, Cépe and Hatsune each tied with four awards, while The CourtYard pulled in three awards and Aria, Da Dong Roast Duck, Din Tai Fung, Grandma’s Kitchen, Green T. House, Jin Ding Xuan, Lan and The Tree each tied with two awards each.

Every year, that’s Beijing invites hundreds of food and beverage professionals to contribute their opinions on the restaurants to be nominated for an award. In the two-month voting period, over 4,000 readers cast a ballot.

Complete coverage of the winners of the 2007 Reader Restaurant Awards will be published in the June edition of that’s Beijing.

Sponsors of the 2007 Reader Restaurant Awards included Arabica Roasters, China Lounge, Eric Paris, Greenpeace, Immersion Guides, Lakeview Place, CAV Warner Home Entertainment and 5100 Tibet Spring. G2 Studios produced the event for that’s Beijing. www.g2studio.net

Your choice if Taj was biased. You did not even take the one of best Indian Foods into the list eliminitating the best contender.

It is a joke

Yeah. Got to agree with OVSFM, who the hell cares. Lots of ballot stuffing, lots of tourist cajoling, lots of BS. Same Stuff, Different Year. We know who is good, and frankly, I'm glad it isn't being broadcast.

Last time i went to Alameda with my boyfriend, there was a cockroach on the wall, then we told the stuff and owner about it, and only to find out that they did not care and walked away from us, no sorry...nothing!!!!
we understand that there are lots and lots of those little buggies in the city...but i didn't expect to see it in one of the "best" restaurants with the "best" service....

What did you expect the owner/staff to do?

dear all i'm sorry to dissapoint you but the Ganges restaurand shouldnt get the outstanding Indian Award... i visited last night with two friends and we've been suffering from diarrheia (laduzi) all day today..even when i called them to complain they hang up on me with their punch line being "thank you for letting us know"! so much for an outstanding restaurant!!! I sure hate indian food now...

I am tired of seeing Cafe Sambal listed as the best ANYTHING. Quite frankly put, their restaurant is a dump. Some try to spin it by saying it is 'quaint' or 'charming'. It is ridiculous! Asian Star has a manager that is friendly and helpful, the wait staff is on the ball, and most importantly, their food is great.

Iam sorry to say, but I am not sure if That's Beijing review is even correct MOST of the time. So I am not sure if the awards for those restaurant is even reliable.. and Little penang is outstanding restaurant? Come on, you 've never tasted good Penang food before! AND Hatsune sashimi is not fresh!! Agreed with the comments above. Same awards to same place, same restaurants blah blah... who was the actual voters? Are you kidding, for real or just to get the job done? Wake up and do a better job !!!!!!!!!! Sometimes, City Weekend has a better review :P

I do not think Din Tai Fung offers the best dim sum. Jin Ding Xuan is even worst. Dim sum in Jin Ding Xuan tastes like reheated frozen food. I wonder why there is no mentioning on "Lee Garden", a real dim sum restuarant in Jinbao Daxia.

finally i can say that dont beleive or see through such magazine to beijing's dine scene, try to find out your self if you are capable and love to eat good food.

LAN Club was a great Restaurant and would have won more awards when the old GM Gordon Barker was running it as he was atrue professional and made each visit very special . Just a pity he left or they would have cleaned up. We went all the time when he was there but he said he got no support from the Owners Management but he loved working there just they did not want to change. Is he still in Beijing as I will go to his new place

Yes I loved LAN when Gordon was there . He really made you feel special. I stopped going now as no longer the same atmosphere.I heard he was looking for work again after going back to Philippines. Good restaurants should get him as GM. LAN is nice but service poor and design for a restaurant is poor as you always see dirty plates piled up

Funny I was thinking about the old GM at LAN also and agree with your comments . Gordon Barker was a very special GM but had to put up with lazy management I heard. He has his own consultancy at www.gordonbarker.com doing management consultancy and is always busy. I know he liked China and his girlfriend is from Beijing so maybe he will come back but I doubt to LAN

I agree that most of these awards happend to coincide with sponsorship. Check out localnoodles.com - they seem to building a list of what WE say instead of what the sponsors demand.

A cursory glance through the pages of that's Beijing will reveal, to those paying any attention at all, that very few winning restaurants are sponsors (aka regular advertisers).

In fact, most advertisers don't win awards, and hence get rather pissed off.
